Review: Chisel Shave Club

Emily HowardComment

I've got an exciting subscription service review for you today! Chisel Shave Club reached out to see if I'd be interested in receiving a box in exchange for an honest review here on the blog. We received the box for free, but all opinions are mine, and my fiance Grant's.

What is Chisel Shave Club?

Chisel is a monthly subscription club for wet shaving. You can purchase a box a month at a time, or sign up for 3-, 6-, or 12-month subscriptions. Chisel offers cancellation at any time, and you can pause your subscription or skip a month if needed. Prices range from $26.99 to $29.99 per month, depending on the length of subscription.

How does it work?

Once you sign up for your subscription, Chisel will send you a box with full-size or samples of wet shaving products, plus single blades. For the purpose of the review, Chisel sent us a box with a double-edge safety razor and a brush (available in the 6- and 12-month subscriptions) and the following items from their December box:

The only downside to wet shaving is the time commitment. Wet shaving takes nearly three times as long, but the results are better.

Is it any good?

I'll let Grant take it from here! :) -em

"I started 'shaving' when I was 12 years old. After attempting to shave with a Swiss Army knife, my granddad bought me an electric razor for Christmas. For the most part, I’ve been a loyal Gillette customer, starting with the Mach 3. I currently use the Fusion Proglide, and I would have bought whatever generation comes after that (Mach 20??). But after learning how to wet shave, I won’t be using traditional razors nearly as often.

I was scared as hell when Em asked me to demo Chisel for her blog. I had never tried wet shaving before, and the idea of putting a straight razor against my skin made me anxious. After watching approximately a thousand videos on YouTube, I decided to give it a shot.

After a hot shower, I lathered up the Dr. Squatch Cedar Citrus Bar and applied it to my face with the brush. I loaded up the razor with a blade, and went to work. Slowly and deliberately, I worked with the grain before a second pass against it. To my surprise, I didn't slit my throat and my face was remarkably smooth. I’d recommend Chisel to any guy who has ever thought about wet shaving, or as a gift to someone who hasn’t.

The only downside to wet shaving is the time commitment. Usually, I can shave my face with a traditional razor in two minutes. Wet shaving takes nearly three times as long, but the results are better. Going forward I will, however, keep some traditional razor blades handy for travel or when I’m running late for work. On the positive side, it is a lot cheaper to replace razor blades than to buy new Proglide cartridges.

Bottom line, check out Chisel Shave Club if you want to try a better way of shaving."

Em's thoughts

I love that wet shaving gives Grant something slow and deliberate to focus on. The products from Chisel feel well-curated, and there's something really classy about seeing Grant use a brush and safety razor to shave. From here on out, I'm not sure if Grant will be subscribing to the box since now he has the razor handle and brush, but I think Chisel is a GREAT gift option for men!

What's in it for me?

Glad you asked! Chisel created a coupon code for my blog readers to receive 10% off their first order! Use code JUSTEM10 at check-out. Easy peasy.

Thanks to Chisel for reaching out, and thanks for reading!
